Henry: An Unlikely Hero from Kari Rene Hall on Vimeo.

Former Los Angeles Times photojournalist Kari Rene Hall spent four years chronicling the ups and downs of a family living at a seedy motel in the shadow of Disneyland, from heated arguments, to the mother’s abandonment, to the father’s struggle to keep his family intact. Hall’s powerful work won National Press Photographers Association’s Pictures of the Year Canon Photo Essay Award in 2000, was produced as an epic multimedia project on MSNBC.com, published in Los Angeles Times Magazine, shown at Visa pour l’Image in Perpignan, France, and was optioned by HBO for a six-hour miniseries. The project lives on in Ken Kobre’s textbook Photojournalism: The Professional Approach and Iranian professor Esmail Abbasi’s comprehensive historical book The Photojournalist in Farsi.
